This would work well as a ‘refresher’ lesson for Year 2 (questions are one of the four question types Year 2 are supposed to be using) and makes sure children get chance to see the unusual word order found in a question before writing their own.
I’ve attached the whole-class input I used as a PDF and also the challenge sheet the children did in the lesson. It’s one sheet for each child, with three differentiated progressively more-challenging sections included.
I had all the children start on Base Camp and carry on from there. The sheet had the answers for the Base Camp and Hill Climbers sections printed on the back, so the children could get immediate feedback and see if they were on the right track before attempting Mountaineers. If they didn’t understand why they got something wrong, they could come to me and I would give a bit of additional input. As an extension task the children could either write more questions in their books independently or take a book from the reading area and see if they could find questions in it.
